Grom clone 5E: “We’re all in it together”
The latest version of Grom is a clone of the classic first human clone from Star Trek, created by American filmmaker and writer Chris Sarandon.
Sarandon’s Grom Clone 5E is set to hit theaters May 1st, 2018, following the release of Star Trek Into Darkness on May 23rd.
The first film is the sixth film in a five-film series starring Zachary Quinto as Captain Picard and the late Leonard Nimoy as Worf, with the final film set to bow on July 17th, 2021.
In addition to the original, Sarandon has produced a sixth film, titled Grom, and a sixth animated series, titled Romulan in Space, both of which premiered in 2017.
Although Sarandon hasn’t released any official comments on the upcoming film, his Twitter account has revealed the next film will be a direct sequel to Star Trek Beyond, titled Enterprise.
This is no small feat for Sarandon, who was the director on the third Star Trek film.
As of May, he had only directed two films, Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek Generations.
He was also responsible for the final two Star Trek films, Wrath of Khan and Nemesis, which all earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.
Since the fifth and final Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Kahn, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017, Saronandon has been known to speak his mind about the franchise.
Last month, he tweeted a photo of himself in a Star Trek shirt with the caption “I love my crew” and “My team, but I don’t care for the franchise.”
Saratandon is known for voicing Worf in the first two Star Wars movies, and has voiced Chewbacca in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.
For his part, Sarandons character is a new breed of clone, created to replace a deceased character.
Grom has been the subject of a lot of controversy since its release, with some claiming it’s a clone made to replace the original character’s body, and others claiming the character is just a character designed to have a sexual relationship with Sarandon’s character.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Grom’s creation is actually “a human with an advanced artificial intelligence.”
As with any cloning project, there are some who say the creation of Gom was a mistake.
“I am disgusted at the way it was handled,” one Twitter user wrote.
Others, however, say the clone is actually a better representation of the character than what the original film portrayed.
According to Sarandon: “I’ve spent years watching [the original] movies and watching the character and I’ve realized I like Grom more than I ever did in the original.”
